Team Guat is ready for our week of service here in Austin. To kick things off we spent an evening together at Nurse Rich’s house on Sunday night. We hung out together outside and enjoyed basketball, 9 square, and Spikeball. After that, we had a delicious taco dinner together and bonded around the table. Finally, we finished up the night with worship and a short devotional. Before we left though, Coach Pete and Nurse Carrie gave Jenny and Drew Aldridge a beautiful painting of their husband and father, Philip. Phil was truly the heart behind our group. Last year, our week in Guatemala was one of the last things he did on this earth before passing away. Mrs. Vaughn’s beautiful painting of Phil and a little boy from Eagle’s Best is so lifelike and captures the spirit of the trip.
The next day we prepared our hearts to serve at the school-wide chapel. Seeing everyone gathered together and hearing the kindergarteners sing “Love In Any Language” is always a treat. After chapel, we all went to Mighty Fine to get some burgers and eat together. This first meal of the week together is a tradition set by Phil. He was always insistent that the first meal in Guatemala would be his treat.
Even though we aren’t at the Nest, we are excited to see God do life-changing work in our very own city. This week we will be serving at Down Home Ranch, Foundation Communities, and Voigt Elementary. Down Home Ranch is a residential facility for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We will be helping them clear out a pasture and clean up around their facility. Foundation Communities is an apartment complex that provides housing for low income families. We will helping them this Wednesday by providing lunch for the residents. On Friday, we will be serving at Voigt Elementary School and donating some books to the kids.
